Shailaja is a performer, choreographer and dance educator of Bharata Natyam (Indian Classical Dance). This dance form integrates pure dance movement and dramatic art. With over 20 years of training in the art form, Shailaja has been performing with Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh- in DC, choreographing and performing work, and teaching students ages 6-16 in the Montgomery County. As the lead dancer of Dakshina, she has performed at the Kennedy Center, Dance Place, Lincoln Theater in DC, Alvin Ailey Theater NYC, and Painted Bride Art Center, Philadelphia. She has also served as a guest lecturer at Johns Hopkins University.
Shailaja will be performing the work of Prof. CV Chandrasekhar, a renowned choreographer, scholar, and dancer in Indian Classical Dance form of Bharata Natyam based in Chennai, India. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan, a prestigious national award, for his life time and innovative contributions to the field of classical dance.
