Meredith Barnes is the director and founder of DanceArtTheater, a non-profit modern dance company located in the Northern Virginia/DC Metro Area. Barnes has performed for many years throughout the United States and abroad. She received her dance training from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received a BFA in dance choreography and performance.
Meredith Barnes’ choreography has been showcased in numerous venues. She has choreographed over 20 works for companies like Joffrey Ballet Workshop, Terpsichorean Dance Company, Auburn University “Daunce”, Yes Virginia Dance, Black College Dance Exchange, Cora de Vicenza, Co-Motion Dance Company, Lawton City Ballet, Mid-America Dance Network showcase, as well as the main choreographer for DanceArtTheater since its inception in 2014.
Barnes has been commissioned to create work on numerous companies and programs, including JMU dance majors, and Helping Hearts Dance. Since its beginning, DanceArtTheater, under the direction of Barnes, has strived to contribute a unique voice to the dance community and foster deeper partnerships with surrounding companies and community. Barnes is also currently the Dance Director for The Fairfax Academy for Communications and the Arts where she enjoys teaching young artists to find their unique artistic voice.
DanceArtTheater is a non-profit modern dance company based in Northern Virginia.
Directed by founder Meredith Barnes, our goal is to provide community events for dancers and non-dancers in the DMV area. We offer financially accessible performances given by modern dancers and collaborate with artists of all disciplines. The company hosts the annual Transformations Dance Festival and has produced successful full-length and short works at various venues. Critics have praised our performances for their beauty and professionalism. We continue to provide exposure to modern dance and other styles, as well as performance and choreographic opportunities for trained dancers pursuing non-dance careers.
Meredith is the co-host of Small Plates Duck
DanceArtTheater are long-time supporters of Small Plates Choreography Festival and have been participants in many of our shows. Most recently they presented “Relationship Impasse” at Small Plates Newburgh 2024 and hosted Small Plates Duck 2024, presenting several works.
