James Morrow is a choreographer, filmmaker, educator, and the founding artistic director of james morrow/ THE MOVEMENT, an interdisciplinary contemporary dance company. His creative practice explores the intersections of movement, film, identity, and place through a signature movement language known as Urban Fusion, which fuses Breakin’, House, Rave, modern, and contemporary dance.
Drawing from his background in street dance, concert dance, and visual storytelling, Morrow creates physically dynamic works that balance athleticism with emotional depth. His choreography is shaped by curiosity, collaboration, and research, often emerging through partnerships with musicians, designers, filmmakers, and communities. Whether developing a stage production, dance film, or site-specific performance, he approaches each project as an opportunity to uncover new ways of telling human stories through movement.
Morrow serves as an Associate Professor of Dance at Old Dominion University, where he mentors emerging artists while advancing research in choreography and performance. Equally influential to his creative practice are his roles as a husband and father, which continually deepen his understanding of empathy, play, vulnerability, and human connection.
