Spaces of Fontana is a contemporary dance collaboration inspired by human moments to create art rooted in hope. Under the artistic direction of Evelyn Joy Hoelscher, we were founded in New York City in 2016 and relaunched in Austin, TX as of May 2023. We are dedicated to filling up every space with positive energy in hopes to leave every person touched with a sense of warmth. As artists, we explore improvisation, contemporary partnering and somatics to bring life to our understanding of a human experience.
While in New York, we developed 7 works, performed 32 times, received multiple grants and were featured in a MNN TV segment on a piece inspired by JPII’s Theology of the Body. We’ve had the honor to present work at various festivals and self-produced shows; including the US Open, Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, Dumbo Dance Festival, Arts on Site, Queensboro Dance Festival, Dixon Place and Mark Morris Dance Group Theater.
Since re-launching in Texas, we have hosted Contemporary Partnering & Play classes and workshops led by our Artistic Director and performed at Dance Carousel, Ballet East’s SEASONS and Round Rock Art’s Imagine. We’ve received 2 commissions for new original works and sold out our premiere of our first evening-length work in Texas, BECOMING, an artistic journey through the seasons of motherhood. We featured 2 guest mother choreographers, 13 Texas dance artists, live original music and an auction with items from local businesses supporting moms and families. Our Artistic Director has taught as a Guest Artist Lecturer for Texas A&M’s dance program and serves as Co-Chair of the Performance Arts Professional Partner Program. As a project-based company, we are committed to fostering a collaborative creative process giving space to each artist to discover their unique voice and connection to the piece. As artists it is our goal to “create works worthwhile and beautiful, [that] not only enrich the cultural heritage of each nation and of all humanity, but they also render an exceptional social service in favour of the common good” as St. Pope John Paul the II wrote in his Letter to Artist.
Spaces of Fontana will be performing “Unfolded” at Small Plates Austin 2024.
