Amy Bukarau – Bukarau Dance

Amy Bukarau is a dancer, choreographer, and educator based in Kailua, Hawaii. Amy received her Masters in Fine Arts in choreography and performance from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2018 and her Bachelors of Arts in Dance from Brigham Young University in 2013. She currently teaches dance at Maryknoll High School and Kailua Dance Academy. Before coming to Hawaii Amy was a ballroom dance competitor based in Utah and toured for 5 years with the BYU Ballroom Dance Company all over the United States, Europe, and South-East Asia. As an undergraduate student she taught ballroom for BYU and was a member of a student-led modern dance company DancEnsemble where she choreographed and performed under the direction of Graham Brown. Her duet “Room Within” was chosen to be presented at the 2014 American College Dance Festival Association held in Montana. Upon graduating from BYU Amy served as artistic director of the ballroom dance company at Orem High school and enjoyed teaching and choreographing at the high school level. As a graduate assistant at the University of Hawaii, Amy had the wonderful opportunity to work closely with UH Professors Betsy Fisher, Amy Schiffner, and Peiling Kao during her thesis choreography and presented her work “Retrospective Memory” in the Footholds concert at the Kennedy Theatre. Her most recent work “Unfinished Beginnings” was created for the students at the University of Alaska Anchorage and was presented at their show in November 2018.
